The Provost

Message from the Provost

Few universities from inception are uniquely postured to address the implicit and explicit complex challenges of Africa. You choosing to join other young Africans at Ashesi to take an active role in the daunting task of moving Africa forward demonstrates your care and courage. It will take courage and belief in yourselves to change the continent’s trajectory and learning the skills and knowledge needed to attain Africa’s renaissance and sustained progress.

At Ashesi, we are in the business of the learning of others. We encourage you to “shesi” (begin) in becoming the person and leader you desire to be, and we provide ethics and integrity, among many values to consider.

Ashesi develops you through a liberal arts core that strengthens your writing, entrepreneurial, and critical thinking skills applicable to several environments, suited to the continent’s human needs and your employability. We prepare you for the depth of knowledge in your field of study and success in a world of constant flux by guiding you to explore how Computer Science, Engineering, or Business may relate to your lives, realities, and transforming African and global societies.

It is not enough to offer you an emancipatory experience in liberal arts and African-Centeredness. We use a transdisciplinary approach to place you into singular and plural new forms of knowledge to deconstruct, reconstruct, reimagine, and repurpose, and to discover who you are as a scholar, a citizen, and a servant leader.

As the Chief Academic Officer of the University, it is an honor, a privilege, and a pleasure, to be a part of your learning story (ubuntu), as you strive for excellence (adinkrahene), critically reflect (Sankofa), and find strength in humility (Dwennimmen) at your many successes.
