The Ghana Energy Awards (GEA) is a prestigious awards ceremony organized by the Energy Media Group in partnership with GP Business Consulting. The ceremony seeks to recognize the achievements and successes of corporate entities (public and private) and individuals within the energy sector. In 2019, the GEA organized its 3rd awards ceremony themed ‘Energy: The Key to a Sustainable Economy for Industrialization’, Ashesi University was honoured with the Energy Efficient Organisation Private Sector award as recognition for its efforts in creating an energy-efficient, climate friendly campus. Other institutions honoured at this ceremony include: Total Ghana, VIVO Energy, Volta River Authority, among others.
Ashesi University is recognized as one of the most environmentally sustainable institutions on the continent. The university has a comprehensive renewable energy and energy efficiency policy, coupled with various policies and institutional conventions that encourage sustainable energy i.e. initiatives to reduce electricity consumption especially in air-conditioning using improved low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants; investments in solar energy and solar heaters integrated in the university’s front-end design (in accordance with Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy); documenting and reporting information on energy resource savings and GHG emissions reduction. This award recognizes Ashesi’s role in the (sustainable) energy sector and provides a platform for the university to share some of its innovations in building an energy-efficient campus.
