Graduation Rates of Students in the 20th Decile at Ashesi University

At four-year institutions, the average Graduation Rate is 35 percent for public universities and 53 percent for private non-profit universities. Not all students graduate in four years. The average for Six-Year Graduation Rate is 59 – 62 percent for public universities and 65 - 68 percent for private non-profit universities. The averages are based on universities outside the African continent, but the data provides an estimation of the trend. Graduation rate data on African Universities is not readily available. Data on African Universities are not readily available. Ashesi’s trend for four-year and six-year graduation rates, (using the average of the three last years to the year) yields the table below. The Ashesi graduation rates, in comparison to data available for both four-year and six-year graduation, are relatively high. Looking at the pattern it would be fair to expect the average four-year graduation rate at Ashesi to be 75% and for the six-year graduation rate overall average to be 85%. Ashesi strives to be equitable to all its students. Students in the 20th decile or below are given a comprehensive scholarship (tuition, accommodation, laptop, stipend, books, annual trip home, meal plan, mentoring, etc.) to promote equity. The target graduation rate for the 20th decile and below is to perform as the average Ashesi student, i.e., a four-year graduation rate of 75% and for the six-year graduation rate overall average to be 85%.

Overall, Ashesi students’ graduation rates are presented in the table.
